The Last Spookstore: A Horror Story Art Show

This massive collaboration between me and now-authors, then-coworkers, Liska Jacobs and Katie Orphan (and honestly, a bunch of other stalwart folks) was so much fun.
– A massive art show opening fandango, followed by a month of Halloween events, supported by daily blog posts
– 31 original works of art based on 31 classics of horror literature (I mostly did the art curation and blog management, which was reviews of all 31 books & interviews of all 31 artists, by 20 or so authors)
– 3 bands, dramatic readings, generously donated photo booth, Gantom lighting effects, and wine/beer, with proceeds supporting literacy …. What a night.

(Hanging in the spot where a tardy piece of art should have been)

Esteemed Guest,

As noted in that stylish map in your hand and the information placard below, you should now be admiring a pen & ink drawing of the most excellent vampire Lestat.  Instead, you are reading this note. You must be disappointed.

The truth is, we did capture him – along with all the other horrors in our triumphant little exhibit – and he was right here in this very spot, but somehow in the push and rush of preparation for opening night he managed to slip his scribbly two-dimensional prison and escape, and none of us noticed it happening. Gah.

Surely, he could not have gotten far, but DON’T PANIC: he is not a bad sort, as vampires go. On the other hand, he’ll suck your lifeblood out through a couple holes in your neck if given half a chance, so don’t go backing into any dark corners.

We are doing our level best to find him, so please check back later. Also, if you happen to own a chainmail turtleneck, now’s the time.

THE SELL

Late one full-moon summer night, The Last Bookstore’s collection of classic horror novels slipped their papery bonds, and oozed into life.  Frankenstein, Pennywise the Clown, Nyarlathotep and countless others roamed at will, terrorizing Last Bookstore staff. Nearly overrun by their evil, we were rescued by 31 artists, who captured these ghastly fiends and imprisoned them in 31 original works of art.

Join us October 3rd 8-11pm for The Last Spookstore: Horror Story Art Show, as these 31 terrors are unveiled. Celebrating with us will be local bands  Tülips, Bloody Death Skull, and The Manx. Donation bar provided by Highland Park Brewery and Field Recordings. This opening night event is FREE.

*And If you have the nerve to take one of the artworks  into your home, art will be for sale during opening night and throughout the month. The Last Bookstore’s art sale commission and bar donations will go to our kindred spirits at 826LA.
